12V Front Terminal Batteries

Western Electrical FTA (Front Terminal AGM) series batteries are specially designed for telecom use, with a design life of over 10 years in float service. By adopting a new AGM separator and a centralized venting system, they feature non-spillable construction and can be mounted in any position with high safety and reliability. The front-access terminals enable quick installation, testing and cable connection in telecom racks and cabinets.
The FTG (Front Terminal GEL) series builds on the FTA platform with silica-gel electrolyte, delivering a longer design life and higher security against leakage. The immobilized electrolyte eliminates acid stratification and keeps performance stable in variable and complex environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are front terminal batteries well suited for telecom base stations and cabinet installations?
Front terminal batteries place the terminals on the front face, so connections can be reached without pulling batteries out of narrow cabinets. Their slim, tall profile matches standard telecom cabinets and 19-inch racks, which makes them a compact choice for base stations and indoor sites.
What maintenance benefits does the front terminal design offer?
All terminals and bolts face forward, so voltage checks, torque inspection and cleaning can be completed from the aisle. This shortens maintenance time, lowers the risk of contacting live parts behind the cells, and allows front access even when cabinets stand side by side.
How are front terminal batteries arranged in a 19-inch rack?
They are typically installed on stacked shelves or trays inside a 19-inch or 23-inch cabinet with terminals facing the aisle. Keep identical models in one string, follow the recommended tray spacing, and leave room for airflow and cable bending.
How should float and equalize charging voltages be set?
For 12V AGM batteries the float voltage is typically about 13.5-13.8 V at 25 °C and the equalize voltage about 14.4-15.0 V, adjusted with temperature compensation. Always follow the datasheet window for the specific range and verify with periodic voltage readings.
What is the design life of front terminal batteries and what affects it?
Quality 12V front terminal AGM batteries are typically designed for about 10-12 years of float service at 25 °C. Ambient temperature, charging voltage accuracy, ripple current and discharge depth are the main factors that shorten or extend real service life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between GEL and AGM front terminal batteries?
Choose AGM for higher charge acceptance, lower cost and general cabinet duty; choose GEL for hotter sites, longer daily cycling or applications where thermal stability and deep discharge tolerance matter most.
What advantages does GEL offer in high temperature environments?
The gelled electrolyte immobilizes the acid completely, which slows water loss and drying out at elevated temperatures and resists acid stratification, so GEL cells age more predictably in hot telecom shelters.
How do I size battery capacity for a telecom power system?
Add up the load power in watts, divide by the system voltage to get current, multiply by the required backup hours, and apply correction factors for temperature, inverter efficiency and the discharge rate, then add a safety margin.
What installation clearances and ventilation requirements apply?
Leave about 10 mm between batteries for air circulation, keep at least 100 mm from heat sources, and size ventilation for hydrogen dilution; even low-gassing VRLA front terminal designs still require airflow.
